Manic Focus is the electronic music project of John “JmaC” McCarten, a Chicago-based producer originally hailing from the Twin Cities. McCarten’s music is known for its multi-dimensional sound, incorporating elements of soul, dubstep, hip-hop, blues and funk, as well as smooth vocal samples, heavy-hitting bass lines, and the occasional rowdy rhymes of hip-hop artists.
Born in Boston in 1986 and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota, McCarten’s introduction to music began at an early age with classical piano training. As a teenager, he became enthralled with the hip-hop culture, citing influences such as Atmosphere, Brother Ali, Green Lantern, and Outkast. In high school, McCarten started producing hip-hop infused beats for his classmates to rap over and recorded tracks in his parent’s basement. While attending DePaul University and living in his new home of Chicago, McCarten continued to master Ableton software and perfect his craft, which has evolved into the electro-soul genre under which he classifies his music today.
Over the last 5 years, JmaC has released four full-length albums, each one a new evolution in sound and approach. After releasing his first three albums independently - Definition of the Rhythm in 2011, Expanding Mind in 2012 and Distant Perspective in 2013 – McCarten released his fourth album, Cerebral Eclipse, on GRiZ’s All Good Records label in 2014. Always one to embrace artistic collaboration, Cerebral Eclipse featured tracks with Dominic Lalli (Big Gigantic), GRiZ, Michal Menert (Pretty Lights Music, Super Best Records) and incorporated an enhanced collection of live instrumentation. He has completed a slew of remixes for artists such as GRiZ, The Floozies, Lettuce, Minnesota and Pretty Lights, and released several works with Pretty Lights Music veterans Break Science.
On the road, JmaC has been steadily building his live performance to include additional musicians and elements of production. Jacob Barinholtz is now a mainstay on the drums, and other musical co-conspirators join the two on select dates around the country. He’s also been known to incorporate surprise guests such as Big Gigantic’s Dominic Lalli, GRiZ, The Floozies’ Matt Hill, and Russ Liquid, to name a few. Occasionally, fans are treated to the rare live fusion of Break Science and Manic Focus, taking the stage as Manic Science.
In the studio, JmaC continues to push himself to new musical limits by incorporating original, sample-free recordings of many up-and-coming musical allies. This is especially apparent in the material from his forthcoming album, Minds Rising, to be released in April of 2017.
Whether it’s at a small-town venue or a world-renowned music festival on his nationwide headlining tour, you won’t want to miss a Manic Focus throw-down.
The Mantras x2 (with a "Talking Dead" set)
The Mantras, a five piece jam machine born of Greensboro, NC have been conquering crowds and melting minds all over the country progressively for over a decade. The band’s music can be described with all types of varying rock and roll terminology, but is absolutely best defined by each listener’s ear and, equally important, their experience.
Since the inception of The Mantras in the mid 2000's, the band has been touring the country and building a catalog of 4 studio albums and over 100 original songs. Performing an entirely different set of music each night is an integral part of the band’s direction and mission as well as the ability to truly improvise in between orchestrated pieces. With eclectic influences of sounds from around the globe, The Mantras create a musical escapade during each performance, giving every ounce of emotion to their craft of expression and communication through music.
The Mantras are a family of rock; their closely-knit bonds can truly be felt by the crowd while the band performs. This is a critical feature of their community. One can easily tell that the musical pockets created by radical guitar riffs, gut checked bass lines, screeching synthesizers, a complete projection light show and two symbiotic drummers are no accident. The musical conversation on stage is simply beautiful to watch. The feeling is not exclusive just to the members on stage, however. The Mantras’ loyal fan base can testify to the reciprocation of love between performer and attendee and in a scene where it is sometimes difficult to stabilize a fan base and a consistent identity, The Mantras do just that. It has all of the ebbs and flows, peaks and valleys and patterns of constriction and release that can hook someone for life. Each show is a story. Each story is unique.

RoC mix their jam-reggae hybrid sound with homegrown roots, guitar-heavy rock, and lead singer/guitarist Brett Wilson’s introspective and conscious laden lyrics.
Freekbass isn’t just another funk artist who regurgitates traditions. Despite growing up in the same Cincinnati/Dayton funk hotbed that produced James Brown’s pioneering King Records catalog and Bootsy Collins and the Ohio Players, he’s produced a 21st century style over the course of six releases that meshes traditional elements of funk with decidedly more modern soundscapes. “As much as I listen... to Sly Stone, Stevie Wonder, OutKast or George Clinton, I also listen to groove and feel groups such as Radiohead, Daft Punk, STS9 and DJ Shadow,” says Freekbass, whose current album, Junkyard Waltz, features guests like Mike Gordon, Buckethead, Bernie Worrell, Jen Durkin, and Gary “Mudbone” Cooper. “So, just like when P-Funk started and were influenced by groups like Zappa, Bowie, and The MC5, these groups of our era are what crawled into my funk.” Determined not to become a one-act show, he also plans to explore new dimensions of live electronica as a duo with turntablist Tobotius, contribute to the next Bootsy Collins record, release a third instructional DVD and develop a pilot for a children’s show.

MojoFlo may have started as a college party band but in the eight years since their inception the group has made a habit of constant growth and reinvention. They have released three EP’s: Waiting (2010) was a mix of individual styles showcasing the group’s versatility. Whatcha Think About That? (2011) found the group dabbling in neo-soul and Hip-Hop. The 7” single “Home to You”/”Dance” (2012) is an ode to old-school soul replete with analogue grit and throwback sensibilities. Right On (Back Around) (2014) finds the band hitting their stride showcasing well written songs and strong performances that capture the essence of their live show.
On top of the recorded material MojoFlo maintains a rigorous touring and performance schedule playing clubs, concerts, festivals, and parties of every shape and size 120+ nights a year. The band has been making headways in the “festival” scene garnering huge praise from their sets at All Good, Rootwire, Fashion Meets Music, and The Werk Out just to name a few. Joining forces with Buffalo’s Frosty Tone DJ crew, Space Junk proved that a live band could hold their own with the late night DJs and MCs. Here they established their long form improvisational development, reminiscent of their DJ influences and counterparts in Trance, DnB, Dubstep and House. Maintaining a presence amongst the DJs and Jam bands in the Allentown bar district, they continued to push the limits of their tension filled peaks.

We are a hybrid of sorts, all of us have managed to come together at different points of our lives to form this experimental sound. With the addition of Sim , we have really found our groove and are on our way to big things in the future. When asked what kind of music we play none of us can really say, a little blues, a little rock n roll, a little reggae, a little pop, a little funk, topped off with some white boy freestyle. You got Experimental Sandwich :)
